AROYA Office Hours Episode Twenty (5/5): Crop Steering for Beginners, Lighting, and a Surprise Moderator

Learn what crop steering knowledge was dropped on this week's sesh with Seth and Phil.

We don't normally do this but . . .

With our lovely Kaisha at Hall of Flowers last week, the role of Office Hours moderator was left open. And you guys made a girl's dream come true, because this writer (yes, me, the one writing the words you're reading) finally got to step into the booth and substitute as this week's mod with Seth and Philโ€”and these cultivators did not disappoint!

Our growing virtual audience submitted a ton of questions about EC, lighting, VPD, and back-to-basics crop steering. Read on for some of the highlights from episode twenty, and watch the full video below.

Each day counts in the grow room.

โ€œWhen we talk about a flowering cycle, we're looking at, you know, 56 to 65 days. Generally each day is greater than 1% of that plant's life and that's a pretty big portion of the total time we have to be productive. So one dayโ€™s loss of growth is one day where we can't be putting the maximum amount of inputs we want into the plantโ€”which means lost grams at the end of harvest.โ€ -- Seth Baumgartner

It's 2022 . . . you can skip the data-entry step.

โ€œI know for me, I'm never going to sit down and put all those notebooks into a spreadsheet. It's way better to use AROYA on my phone and just put it in and it skips that data-entry step. And then I actually have those digital analytics to look at rather than having to sit down and spend a week doing data entry . . . you know, it's a game changer.โ€ -- Seth

Measure the things that matter most, then adjust.

โ€œThe most important thing is, no matter what the right answer is, the only way to know if you're doing it right is by measuring. That's what I love about the system because by having the right sensors and being able to understand what crop steering is, how the crop is responding, and what the crop is experiencing throughout all of those nine Cardinal parameters, that's really just the base; that's the ground for what needs to happen for us to be able to do any change.โ€ -- Phil Malmquist

Replicable results are good for business.

โ€œYou know, number one right now, the legal protections for cannabis varieties and cultivars are not the same. So other than a private contract, you don't have a guarantee that what you're getting is what anyone says it is. And the other side of it is, unless you're using something like AROYA and a pretty comprehensive control system, it's really hard to replicate an environment that tightly to get those replicable results.โ€ -- Seth

Tech that's been perfected, now it's ready for cannabis.

โ€œOn the sensor side, we have those sensors that we developed over the course of decades, and now we've optimized them for the cannabis industry specifically.โ€ -- Phil
